William Roland Nixon was born in 1898 in Rugby, Warwickshire and was the son of Thomas a grocer and confectioner and Martha Nixon, née Barker of 118, Alfreton Rd., Nottingham. His parents had only recently moved into All Saints parish when their only son was killed. His father Thomas was born in 1874 in Heckington, Lincolnshire and his mother Martha Barker was born in 1868 in Great Hale, Lincolnshire, they were married in 1896 their marriage was recorded in the Sleaford Registration District , they had a further child a daughter Katherine b1897 at Heckington Lincolnshire. In the 1911 census the family are living at 56 Hartley Road, Nottingham and are shown as Thomas 37 yrs a grocer and confectioner, he is living with his wife Martha 43 yrs and their children Katherine 14 yrs and William Roland 13 yrs.
Private William Roland Nixon, enlisted at Nottingham and served with the 18th Battalion West Yorkshire Regiment (Bradford Pals), he was killed in action on 3rd May 1917. Having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Arras Memorial
War obituary, All Saints Church News, July 1917: 'Rowland [William Roland] Nixon, 118 Alfreton Road, age 19, only son, killed in action May 3rd 1917. Keen non-conformist. Parents recently come to live in this parish.' In memoriam published 3rd May 1918 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “NIXON. – In loving memory of William Roland Nixon, who was killed while bandaging a wounded comrade, May 3rd, 1917. Memory keeps our loved one near us. – Mother, father, and Katie.” Article published ‘Hucknall Dispatch’, 14th June 1917). "Those of our readers who will remember Mr. and Mrs. T.
