William Maule Norcutt (junior) was born in 1899 at Newark and was the son of William Maule Norcutt (senior) and Sarah Elizabeth Norcutt nee Culley of 4, Cherry Holt Lane, Newark. His father William Maule Norcutt was born in 1873 at Peterborough and his mother Sarah Elizabeth Culley was born in 1874 at Newark, they were married in 1896 at Newark and went on to have 4 children, 1 sadly died in infancy or early childhood their surviving children were Harold b1898, William Maule b1900 and Joseph Arthur b1909 all were born in Newark. In the 1911 census the family is living at 4 Queens Road, Newark and are shown as Sarah Elizabeth Norcutt 37 yrs , married head of the family and a finisher in clothing manufacture and she is living with her children, Harold 13 yrs a scholar , William Maule 11 yrs a scholar and Joseph Alexander 2 yrs.
Private William Maule Norcutt enlisted at Newark and served with t he 1/4th battalion Northumberland Fusiliers. He died of wounds on 4th June 1918 and is buried at Dijon (Les Pojeces) Communal Cemetery, Cote d'Or, France
Article published 3rd July 1918 in the Newark Advertiser :- “Second son of Mrs S.E. Swain (formerly Norcott), 4 Cherry Holt Lane, Newark and late William M. Norcott. He attended the Wesleyan School and later Lovers’ Lane School, also a scholar at North End Wesleyan Sunday School. Previous to enlisting in July 1917, worked at Messrs. Quibell’s. Attached to the Northumberland Fusiliers and went to France on April 3rd. Hit in the right shoulder by a piece of shrapnel. Not at first considered to be badly wounded, it became serious very rapidly and he died in an American hospital in France. His elder brother, L/Cpl. H. Norcott has been in the army since Sept. 1914, having seen active service in the Dardanelles, German East Africa, Palestine and now in France.
