Family History

John Henry Nock was born in 1887 the son of William Henry known as Harry a coal miner and Sarah Jane Nock née Fletcher, of 23 North Street, Shoulder of Mutton, East Kirkby. William Henry was born in 1854 at West Bromwich , Sarah Jane Fletcher was born in 1862 also at West Bromwich, married on 23rd December 1883 at West Bromwich they went on to have 6 Children. John married Fanny Caroline White on 25th April 1908 at Nottingham, they lived at 33 Sherwood Place, Nuncargate, Kirkby in Ashfield and went on to have the following children, Fanny born 21st October 1910, Benjamin 29th May 1913 and Nellie born 11th October 1916. In 1911 the family lived at 2 Sherwood Place Nuncargate Nottinghamshire. Commencing 5th May 1919 his widow Fanny was awarded a pension of 28 shillings and 7 pence a week.

Military History

Private John Henry Nock initially enlisted on 27th August 1914 at Hucknall giving his age as 26 yrs and 320 days he was a coal miner, posted to the Royal Field Artillery as a driver he was discharged from the Army on 7th October 1914 as not likely to become an efficient soldier. He attested once more on 14th February 1916, giving his age as 29 yrs and 120 days, he was a coal miner. Posted to the reserves he was mobilised for war on 13th May 1918 and posted to the Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He landed in France on 6th September 1918 and joined his battalion, 10th battalion Sherwood Foresters in the field on 11th September 1918. He was killed in action on 14th October 1918 and is buried at Montay-Neuvilly Road Cemetery 2.A.11
