Family History

He was the son of Arthur John and Emily Bates of 44 Midland Avenue, Lenton, Nottingham, who had four children, Harold AW, Ann B, Alfred Neville and Albert John. Alfred and Albert were twins, born (Oct/Nov/Dec) 1892. Arthur (28) and Emily (21) were married at the time of the 1881 census; Arthur was a journeyman tailor and they lived on Clifton Terrace, Queen's Walk. By 1891 they were living at 3 Welbeck Street, Nottingham, and Arthur was a tailor's assistant. They had two children, Harold AW (9) and Ann B (7). Ten years later in 1901 they had two more children, Albert and Alfred, and were now living with Arthur's father, William Bates (70), a widower, on 12 Melville Street. William was a tailor and draper, working from home. Only the three youngest children were in the household. By 1911 Arthur and Emily with Alfred (18) and Albert (18) were at 45 Midland Avenue. Arthur was a tailor on his own account, working from home, and both sons were student teachers.

Nottingham Evening Post obituary (abridged), 7 July 1916: ‘Bates. Killed in action July 2nd (sic), Second Lieutenant Alfred Neville Bates, Sherwood Foresters. Son of Arthur John and Emily Bates, 44 Midland Avenue, Lenton.’Probate: Bates Alfred Neville of 44 Midland Avenue, Lenton, Nottingham, second-lieutenant in HM Army died 2nd (sic) July 1916 in France. Administration (with Will), Nottingham 29 August to Albert John Bates schoolmaster [brother]. Effects £70 12s. 8d. Resworn £113 18s 1d.The news of his death was published on 8th July 1916 in the Nottingham Daily Express “Second-Lieutenant A. N. Bates, of the Sherwood Foresters, who was killed in action on Sunday last, [sic] was a son of Mr. Arthur J. Bates, of Midland-avenue, Lenton. He was formerly a student at Nottingham University College, where he took both pass and honours degree in the London University examinations.
