Gerald Walker Barlow was born on 1st October 1888 at Lowdham and was the son of Edwin and Sarah Barlow née Walker of 'Stoneleigh' Plumtree . his father Edwin was born in 1849 at Droylsden, Lancashire, his mother Sarah Walker was born in 1854 also at Droylsden , they married in 1878 at Lancashire and went on to have the following children, William Alfred b1879 Droylsden, Annie b1881 Nottingham, Herbert b1887 Lowdham In the 1901 census they lived on Nottingham Road Lowdham In the 1911 census Gerald is living at 44 Manwood Road, Crofton Park, Brockley, London, he is 22 yrs old and is a silk salesman he is boarding with John Black. Gerald married his wife Hilda Edith Simpson (born 21st January 1889 Notts) on 23rd December 1915 at St Mary's Church, Lowdham, they lived at 'Charnwood', Lowdham. Commencing 30th April 1917 his widow was awarded a pension of 16 shillings and 3 pence a week.

Military History

Sergeant Gerald Walker Barlow enlisted on 14th June 1915 at Nottingham he gave his age as 26 yrs 7 months, he was a drapery warehouseman and his address was 'Charnwood' Lowdham his next of kin was his mother Sarah of Stoneleigh, Porchester Road, Mapperley, Nottingham. He served with the Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He was appointed Lance Corporal 24th July 1915 and promoted Corporal 17th August 1915, and Sergeant 20th October 1915. He went to France 6th March 1916 and was killed in action, 3rd September 1916, in the attack on the German positions at Beaumont Hamel, France during the Battle of the Somme. Having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial Pier and Face 10 C 10 D and 11 A
