Frederick was born in Retford on 4th October 1876 and was the son of William a shoemaker and Martha Bannister (nee Troops) and was the Husband of Annie Bannister, of 7, Wellington St., Retford, Notts. In the 1911 census Fred and his family as shown as living at Broadberys Yard, Spital Hill Retford, he is a maltsers labourer. The census states that they have had 9 children, however only 5 of which survived to 1911 and only 4 are living with them, Annie Lizzie , Marhta ,Charles and Eveline there eldest son Frederick is not at the address on the night of the census. it was a double tragedy that struck this family in the autumn of 1918 when Annie Bannister lost first her son in September and then her husband in October, both being killed in action.
Frederick enlisted in Retford on 6th January 1915 and served with the 11th battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts and Derbys ) Regiment. He had served in France and in Italy and then once again in France where he was killed in action on 6th October 1918 , his body was never recovered and his name is commemorated on the Vis-En-Artois memorial, Pas De Calais, France
His eldest son Frederick Charles also served in the Great War in the 22nd battalion Tyneside Scottish battalion ,Northumberland Fusiliers who was killed in action in September 1918 a month before his father.
