He was the son of George and Mary Atkinson Born First Quarter 1888 Newark On 1891 Census he is living with his parents and siblings – Nellie and Ethel May - at Balderton Gate, Newark. His father is listed as a joiner / carpenter On 1901 Census he is living with his parents and siblings – Nellie, Ethel May and Walter – at 37 Jubilee Street, Bowbridge Road, Newark. His father is listed as a joiner On 1911 Census he is living with his mother and siblings – Ethel May, Walter and George Padley – at 37 Jubilee Street, Bowbridge Road, Newark. He is listed as joiner for general builder.

The Register of Soldiers Effects wrongly quotes his death as occurring in France. This is incorrect as the Regiment arrived in Salonika in February 1916 and did not return to Egypt until June 1917 and saw no service in France. He is remembered on the Doiran Memorial Article published 4th April 1917 in the Newark Advertiser :- Eldest son of Mary Atkinson, 37 Jubilee St., Newark and late George Atkinson. Volunteered to take a message under fire to two men who were in danger of being cut off. Three Bulgars fired at him and he was lost sight of in some bushes. Prior to war was joiner’s apprentice with Messrs. Brown & Son. Enlisted in Sherwood Rangers, Oct. 1914. Served in Egypt, Serbia and finally Salonika. Brother Walter, age 25, is also at Salonika.
