Edward Martin was born in 1889 at Nottingham and was the son of James a carter and the late Maria Martin nee Cooper of Nottingham. His father James was born in 1849 at Nottingham and his mother Maria Cooper was born in 1855 also at Nottingham, they were married in 1872 at Nottingham and had the following children, Alfred b1872, Martha b1876, James b1879, Harriett b1882 and Edward b1889, all were born in Nottingham. In the 1911 census he was serving in the army, he is living at Winchester barracks and is 23 yrs of age, single and serving with the King's Royal Rifle Corps. He married Sarah Ann Denay on 26th July 1913 in the parish church at Radford, they lived at 12, Clayton Square, Mitchell Street, Radford, Nottingham and went on to have a daughter Elica Gwendoline born 13th August 1914. Following his death his widow Sarah Ann was awarded a pension of 16 shillings a week which commenced on 7th June 1915.
Rifleman Edward Martin enlisted on 12th September 1906 at Nottingham, he gave his age as 19 yrs and 2 months and his occupation as that of a general labourer, his religion was Roman Catholic. He stated he had previous military service with the 4th battalion Sherwood Foresters. He was posted to the King's Royal Rifle Corps and served until he was placed into the army reserves his time served. He was mobilised for war on 5th August 1914 and reported tot he Winchester He landed in France on 13th August 1914 and was killed in action on 14th November 1914, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Menin Gate memorial Ypres, Panel 51 and 53
