Joseph Frederick was born in 1896 at Basford and was the son of George Henry a brick layers labourer and his second wife Mary Ann Marshall née Herrett of 23 Mount Pleasant , Old Basford Nottingham. His father George Henry was born in 1857 at Basford, he married his first wife Sarah Ann Guyler who was born 1858 and died in 1893 aged 35 yrs, they were married in 1876 their marriage was registered in the Basford Registration district, they went on to have the following children, George Henry b1877, Ann Elizabeth b1878, Arthur William b1881, Percy Herbert b1883, Grace Ellen b1885, Albert Horace b1886, Emma Ethel b1891 all were born in Basford. Following the death of his mother his father remarried in 1898 to Mary Ann Herrett born 1858 Ashover, Derbyshire, their marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration district, they went on to have a son Joseph Frederick born 1896 In the 1911 census Joseph Frederick is living with his parents at 23 Mount Pleasant, Old Basford, Nottingham and are shown as George Henry Marshall 54 yrs a brick layers labourer, he is living with his wife Mary Ann 53 yrs and his son Joseph Frederick 15 yrs a hosiery trimmer.
Private Joseph Frederick Marshall was called up for service on 23rd March 1916 and reported to the Derby depot, he was 20 yrs and 216 days old, his address was 23 Mount Pleasant, Old Basford, Nottingham, he was a wicker worker and his next of kin was his father George Henry of the same address. He was posted with the service number 39283 to the Northumberland Fusiliers Regiment and embarked from Folkstone on 7th July 1916 landing the same day at Boulogne. He was serving with the 1/7th battalion Duke of Wellingtons West Riding Regiment when he was wounded in action (a gun shot wound) on 17th September 1916 and was admitted to the 3rd Casualty clearing station. He died of his wounds on 23rd September 1916 and is buried at Puchevillers British Cemetery, France.
Nottingham Evening Post In Memoriam 22/9/1917: 'Marshall. In loving memory of our dear son Fred Marshall, Northumberland Fusiliers, died of wounds in France September 23rd 1916 aged 21. Peace perfect peace. - From sorrowing father and mother Mount Pleasant Old Basford.' His brother Corporal Arthur William Marshall enlisted at Basford on 5th April 1911, he served with the 1st battalion Royal Fusiliers. He landed in France on 10th September 1914 and was killed in action on 5th November 1914. He was buried in Le Trou Aid Post Cemetery, Fleurbaix, ,
