Family History

He was the son of Charles and Mary Ann Wildsmith of 31 Park Street Sutton in Ashfield Nottinghamshire and the brother of William, killed in action 30/9/1917 and Wilfred killed in action 28/3/1918. He was also the brother of Edgar and Ethel Wildsmith.

Military History

He was awarded the Military Medal for bravery in the field during the attack on the Breslau and Hairpin Craters section of the front line, he being mentioned twice in the Regimental History for having shown great gallantry during this attack on 2nd January 1918, when serving in 'D' Company, commanded by Captain Simonet who won the Military Cross in this action. The award of Wildsmith's Military Medal was published in the London Gazette for 19th March1918. He was subsequently killed in action during the Battalion's "last fight" at the Battle of Regnicourt on 17th October 1918, when still serving with 'D' Company which was split during the attack but still captured two enemy machine guns.
