Family History

He was born in Retford in 1884 and was the son of Albert, a butcher and shop keeper, and Mary Ann Ostick who lived at Ashleigh, Lime Tree Avenue, Retford. Albert and Mary had a large family of nine children. His siblings were: Ethel, Frances, William Edward, Albert, Mabel, Frederick and George. In the 1901 census the family are living at 57 Carol Gate, Retford. Charles is 17 years of age and an apprentice butcher . He married Adelaide Sharpe in December 1904 at Gainsborough and by the 1911 census he and Adelaide are living at 19 Kirke Street, Retford. Charles is 27 years of age and a butchers assistant and states he has been married for six years and his wife, who was born at Sturton by Stow in Lincolnshire, is 30 years. They have two children, Kathleen born 1906 and Dorothy born 1909. Charles' brother, Frederick, enlisted in the Territorial Force as a sapper on 26 May 1913, when he was 17 years 10 months old. His trade when he joined the Territorials was that of fitter and turner with Cammel Laird & Co. and on the outbreak of war he engaged in war work at a projectile factory in Dudley. He survived the war.

Military History

Charles enlisted at Retford and initially served with the Sherwood Foresters (3460) but later transferred to the 2/5th Hampshires. It was while he was with this battalion in Palestine that he was killed by a grenade whilst on a raid. He is buried in the Ramleh War Cemetery, Israel grave reference T 68
