Oliver George Bartrop was born in Worksop in 1887 to William and Mary Ann Bartrop, nee Holdsworth. William was born in Worksop and Mary Ann was from Rotherham, where they married in 1879, before returning to reside at 56 Church Walk, Worksop. William was for several years a railway porter. Over the next 8 years they produced 4 children, Dora, Darwin Holdsworth, William Cecil and Oliver, who was the youngest. Darwin later became a commercial clerk and William, a bank clerk. By 1901, William senior was working as an insurance agent and Oliver, being the youngest, was still at school. When he was 19 years old he married Elizabeth Annie Wilson in Worksop in 1907.
Gunner Oliver George Bartrop Worksop Guardian 31 May 1918 We also record with great regret the death of another Worksop soldier in Gunner Oliver George Bartrop, R.G.A., who was killed in action in France on April 27th. His wife, who resides at 171, Carlton Road, Worksop, received official news on Tuesday. Deceased was the youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. William Bartrop, 143, Carlton Road, and was thus a member of an old and respected Worksop family. He leaves a widow and four children to mourn his loss. In civilian life he was employed at Messrs, Hay and Son’s Ltd., wine and spirit Merchants, Sheffield, but shortly after the commencement of the war he went back to work on munitions. He enlisted in July last year, and after six months training was sent to France. His last letter home was written the day before his death, April 26th, when he was quite alright and in good health. No details as to his death are yet to hand. He was apprenticed to Mr. T.J. Green, ironmonger, Worksop, and had lived in Sheffield for six years. His brother, Gunner Cecil Bartrop, R.F.A., formally a clerk in Becketts, Bank, is serving in France, having seen a lot of severe fighting in Palestine , he being one of the Worksop men to assist in the capture of Jerusalem. Much sympathy is expressed with his widow and children, and his parents in their loss.
