Walter Henry Barlow was born in 1880 at Warsop, he was baptised on 24th July 1881 at St Peters Church, Warsop, he was the son of William Barlow an artist/tailor and Mary Ann Barlow née Annabel of 48, Sherwood Street, Warsop, Nottinghamshire His father was born in 1854 at Carburton, his mother Mary Ann Annabel was born in 1854 at Warsop, they were married on 25th January 1877 at St Peters Church, Warsop, they went on to have 7 children, sadly 1 died in infancy or early childhood. In the 1911 censu the family was living at 48 Sherwood Street, Warsop, William 57 yrs is an artist/tailor, he is living with his wife Mary Ann 57 yrs and their son Walter 30 yrs of age and is a farm labourer. Walter married Emily Cobb (born 12th April 1888) on 16th October 1911 at St Peters Church, Warsop, they lived at 3 Argyle Steet, Mansfield, they had two children, William Henry born 24th January 1913 and Emma born 20th January 1914. Commencing 2nd December 1918 his widow was awarded a pension of 25 shillings and 5 pence a week.
Private Walter Henry Barlow enlisted on 19th May 1915 at Mansfield giving his address as 120 Brownlow Road, Mansfield, he gave his age as 36 yrs and 320 days, he was a labourer. He went to France 29th December 1916 and was admitted to 36 Casualty Clearing Station at Cayeux, France, 1st April 1917, suffering from trench foot and trench fever. He was transferred to No.12 General Hospital Rouen, 3rd April 1917 before being transferred to England on Hospital Ship Aberdonian, 28th April 1917. He returned to France to France 9th September 1917 and was killed in action, 21st March 1918, aged 34, during the German attack on the British line near Noreiul, Ervillers, France.
