David Francis Wainwright was the eldest child born to Solomon Wainwright and Annie Elizabeth Wells in 1890 at Worksop. His brothers and sisters were Elizabeth 1893, Lily 1894, William 1896, Ethel 1898, Violet 1900, John 1905, Jessie 1906 and Nellie born 1908, all born in Worksop. Solomon died in 1909 age 51 at Worksop. In 1911 the family were resident at 52 Eastgate. It was the following year that David Francis Wainwright move to Maltby and a couple of years later, on 31st Aug 1914 he was attested at Rotherham, Yorks.
Pte David Frances Wainwright Worksop Guardian 24 December 1915 We regret to have to chronicle the death while on active service of Pte David Frances Wainwright of 46 Muglet Lane, Maltby and formerly of Worksop. Pte Wainwright was born in Abbey Street, Worksop and latterly lived at Allen Street, previous to coming to Maltby just over three years ago. He was 25 years of age and for a considerable number of years worked at the Shireoaks Colliery. He was well known in Worksop where he belonged to the Sherwood Forester (Territorials). He enlisted in the 10th Battalion of the Sherwood Foresters at the outbreak of the war, but was discharged in the following December suffering from rheumatism. He re-enlisted in A Company of the Notts and Derbyshire Regiment last August and met his death at Suvla on the night of Nov. 26th. The following letter has been received by his widow from the Captain commanding his Company, notifying her of the occurrence:- “I deeply regret having to inform you that your husband was killed in his trench on the night of Nov. 26th by the falling in of the roof, which was covered with earth. There were eight others killed and 12 injured at the same time. They are all buried at West Beach Cemetery, Sulva, Turkey, and we will erect a cross on each man. Needless to say, this melancholy accident has cast a gloom over all of us. If there is any further information you would like to have, please write to me, and I will gladly send you all in my possession. With deepest sympathy, yours sincerely, M Martin, Capt.
