In 1901, William Peatfield, a native of Retford, was a widower living at Beck Row, Spital Hill, Retford. He had four children living with him, daughters Mary Ann born 1885, son Herbert born 1888, son Barney born 1891 and daughter Lizzie, born 1895. All four were born in Retford. There were two deaths in the family over the next few years. The first was Herbert in Retford in 1902 when he was age 14, and after the family moved to Worksop, William died in 1909 aged 83. The three remaining children were still living in Worksop in 1911, Mary Ann had married to George Robinson and was resident at Mill Street. Her younger sister, Lizzie (Elizabeth) was also residing in the house. Where Barney was living is unknown as on the night of the census, he is recorded as ‘sleeping in a boat without the owner’s permission’. The boat was a canal boat, moored up on Worksop canal.
Barney Peatfield enlisted from Sheffield, went to the Western Front where he was killed in action and is commemorated on the Ploegsteert memorial, Belgium
