Harry Mokes and Edith Ann Sills registered their marriage in Worksop in 1896. Their first two children, Arthur Bernard and Jessie Mokes were born in Creswell, Derbyshire. The family then moved to Worksop by 1901 living at 30 Gladstone Street where Harry worked as a coal miner. They had 3 more children who were born in Worksop before 1911, Harold born 1902, Mary Ann in 1906 and May in 1909 and now residing at 90 Westgate Street. Arthur, their first born from 1898, was now 13 and was employed as a telegraph messenger boy.
Although Arthur Mokes was resident in Worksop at the time of enlistment, the place he actually enlisted was far away in Inverness, Scotland in the Cameron Highlanders. He went to France where he was killed in action on 28th March 1918. Pte Bernard Mokes Worksop Guardian 10th May 1918 Pte Bernard Mokes of the Cameron Highlanders is the son of Mr and Mrs H Mokes, 90 Westgate, is reported missing and is believed to be a prisoner of war. Pte Mokes is 21 years of age and has already had a hard experience of a soldiers life. He enlisted in Oct 1915 and was wounded in the tremendous fighting in the Somme. He was struck by shrapnel in his knee, and as a consequence, was discharged. He was recalled on Aug 2nd last year and was sent to France on Feb 7th, since which date, his regiment has born a gallant part in checking the German advance. He is well known in Worksop, where his family is well respected, and he himself, is exceedingly popular with all who knew him. His father is a miner at Creswell and he and Mrs Mokes will have the sympathy of their many friends in their anxiety.
