Family History

John Darby was born in 1898 at Nether Broughton, and was the son of John William a waggoner on a farm and Elizabeth Darby, of Plumbtree village, Nottinghamshire. His father John Darby was born in 1862 at Eaton, Leicestershire and his mother Elizabeth was born in 1863 in Keyworth, they were married C1885, They went on to have 5 children, sadly two died in infancy or early childhood, their surviving children were William b1889 Nottingham, Edith b1894, Nether Broughton, John 1898 Nether Broughton In the 1911 census the family were living at Plumtree village and were shown as John William 49 yrs a waggoner on a farm, he is living with his wife Elizabeth 48 yrs and their children, Edith 17 yrs a domestic servant and John 13 yrs a farm labourer.

Military History

Private John Darby enlisted at Mansfield and served with the 2/5th battalion King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry. He died of wounds on 25th May 1917 and is buried at Achiet le Grand Communal Cemetery Extension Grave Reference: 1.I.8
