On the morning of 10/04/1918 the division, including 22nd Battalion, Northumberland Fusiliers, was moved back as a result of german pressure. The 22nd battalion moved by companies under enemy fire, which began to increase. Along with the 23rd Battalion they reached the Estaires-Lys line and took up defensive positions. It was on that day that Pte. Griffin was killed in action. His body was never recovered, but his name was commemorated on the Ploegsteert Memorial.
