Bertram John Woodford was born in 1897 in Hucknall and was the son of William a railway signalman and Georgina Woodford née Alexander of The Green, Old Dalby, Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire. His father William was born in 1870 in Willoughby on the Wolds and his mother Georgina Alexander was born in 1863 in Yatton Keynell, Wiltshire, they were married in 1895 , their marriage being recorded in the Basford Registration district, they had a further son Douglas Edward born 1903 in Carlton Le Willows, Nottingham. In the 1911 census the family are living at The Green , Old Dalby and are shown as William 41 yrs head of the family a railway signalman , he is living with his wife Georgina 43 yrs and his widowed mother Jemima Woodford 66 yrs, and his two sons Bertram John 14 yrs a grocers assistant and Douglas Edward 8 yrs a scholar.

Military History

Lance Corporal Bertram John Woodford, enlisted in Melton Mowbray, he was residing at Oakham at the time he served with the 2/4th Battalion Leicestershire Regiment, was killed in action on 24th March 1918 while in the trenches at Ervillers. He has no known grave, his name is commemorated on the Arras Memorial.
