Family History

Joseph Swain was born in 1870 the son of the late James and Rebecca Swain. Joseph married Lily Neville (born 1869 Wombwell) in 1890 at Rotherham. They went on to have six children , however 3 died in infancy or early childhood. Their surviving children were all born in Wombwell and were Doris Mary b.1898, Lillian b1.900 and Alex Neville b.1904. In 1911 they lived at 91 Barnsley Road, Wombwell, Yorkshire.

Military History

Company Sergeant Major Joseph Swain, had originally enlisted into the army on 25th February 1900 at Pontefract .He served during the Boer War and was later discharged. When war broke out he again enlisted at Wath on Dearne whilst residing at Wombwell. He landed in France on 13th April 1915 and died of wounds at No. 8 Stationary Hospital, Wimereux on 15th July 1915. He is buried in Wimereux Communal Cemetery.
