Family History

Joseph Lownds was born in 1888 the son of William and Prudence Lownds née Knight (died 1900 aged 35). Married in 1883, they had three further children Emma b.1886 Hucknall John b.1890 underwood and Prudence (1891-1892) b. Underwood. Joseph married his wife Jessie Kenney (born 17th October 1895) in 1916 in Nottingham they lived at 84 Elland Street, New Basford, Nottingham. Following his death his widow was awarded a pension of 13 shillings and 9 pence a week, she later remarried to become Jessie Byron and lived at 7 Platt Street, Sneinton, Nottingham

Military History

Joseph Lownds enlisted in Hucknall, initially serving with the 12th (Pioneer) Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire) Regiment. He next served with 14th Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers before transferring to 1/6th Battalion. He landed in France on 29th August 1915 and was killed in action on 17th April 1917 having no known grave his name is commemorated on the the Arras Memorial.
