Family History

John Loach was the son of Thomas a coal miner hewer and Maud Loach (née Stacy) of 58, Doncaster Road, Barnsley. Thomas, who died at Barnsley aged 42 in 1914, and Maud were both born in 1872, Thomas at Pilsley, Derbyshire, Maud Stacey at Hucknall. Married in 1891, they went on to have the following children born at Hucknall - John b.1891 Charles b.1894, Henry b.1896, Thomas b.1899. They later had Annie b.1902 at Basford and Doris b.1908 at Barnsley. In 1911, the family was living at 26 George Street, Hucknall. Charles was a boot mender and Henry a collier pony driver whilst Thomas and Annie were at school. It has not been possible to trace John Loach on the 1911 Census.

Military History

John Loach enlisted at Barnsley on 10th December 1915 aged 24 years and 250 days. He was posted to the 13th Battalion York and Lancaster Regiment and landed in France on 5th April 1916. He died of wounds on 4th July 1916 at the 1st General Hospital at Etretat, France and is buried in Etretat Church Yard.

Extra Information

Two of John Loach's brothers were also killed in action serving with 13th Bn York & Lancaster Regiment - Private Henry Loach 7/7/1916 and Private Thomas Loach 12/4/1918.
