Thomas Edward Clarke was born in 1895 at Hucknall he was the son of Enoch a coal miner hewer and Myrah Clarke, née Shelton of 48 Morven Street, Creswell. Enoch was born in 1872 at Hucknall Myrah Shelton was born in 1870 at Hamstall, Staffordshire, they were married in 1891 their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district, they had 4 children in 1891 they lived at 24 Morven Street Cresswell Derbyshire and in 1901 at 81 Albert Street Hucknall. In 1911 they had returned to Cresswell and lived at 48 Morven Street. In the 1911 census the family are living at 48 Morven Street, Creswell, Enoch 39 yrs is a coal miner hewer, he is living with his wife Myrah 41 yrs and their children, Vincent Enoch 18 yrs a coal miner, Thomas Edward 16 yrs a coal miner, Samuel 1 yrs and Cyril 8 yrs.
Thomas Edward Clarke entered theatre (France) on 16 March 1915 and probably arrived at the 1st Battalion Sherwood Foresters with a draft of men on 23rd March. The war diary for 19 June 1915 - ' Weather fine. About 1 p.m., Sgt Hinett and Sgt Gaddard M.G. section (machine gun), crawled into the enemy sap opposite B right. They found it unoccupied, but signs of recent occupation by a good many men. Presumably by night. About 4 p.m., enemy shelled about trench headquarters with 5.9 shells H.E. (High explosive). Casualties 7 killed and 6 wounded. By about 8 pm., all was quiet. Apparently a relief was going on as transport was heard. Fairly quiet night' All 7 men including Thomas are listed as buried or commemorated in the same cemetery.John Morse
Enlisted at Worksop whilst living at Creswell. Buried in Neuve Chapelle Churchyard and his grave was later destroyed by shellfire.
