Ernest Brownlow was born on 25th June 1885 at Hucknall Torkard and was the son of Thomas a coal miner and Sarah Ann Brownlow née Upton of 105 Margaret Street Coalville Leicestershire. His father Thomas was born in 1851 at Coalville and his mother Sarah Ann Upton was born in 1854 also at Coalville, they went on to have 11 children, sadly one died in infancy or early childhood, their children listed on the 1901/1911 censes were Harriett b1871 Coalville, George William b1873 Coalville, Joseph b1875 Coalville, Arthur b1877 Coalville, Ernest b1885 Hucknall, Walter b1887 Hucknall, Ambrose b1890 Coalville, Thomas b1893 Coalville Hannah b1895 Colaville Thomas married his wife Sarah Elizabeth Sharp in 1905 at Ashby De La Zouch, they lived at 99 Margaret Street, Coalville and went on to have the following children, George Henry born 24th May 1907, Ernest born 9th March 1909, Hannah Elizabeth born 4th February 1911 , Thomas William born 30th December 1912 and Phyllis Eva Irene born 30th August 1914. In the 1911 census Thomas and his family are living at 201 Ashby Road, Coalville and is shown as Ernest 26 yrs a coal miner he is living with his wife Sarah 25 yrs and their children, George 3 yrs Ernest 2yrs and Hannah 2 months of age. Following his death his widow Sarah was granted a pension of 24 shillings and 6 pence for her and her 5 children to commence on 16th October 1916. His widow Sarah eventually remarried in 1919 at Ashby De La Zouch to Arthur Slatter.

Military History

Enlisted at Loughborough on 3/5/1915 into the 3/5th Bn Leicestershire Regt. age 30 years 9 months. Arrived France on 4/3/1916 and was transferred to the 1/5th Bn on 21/3/1916. He died of wounds 5 days later.

Extra Information

Two of his brothers were also killed whilst serving in the Leicestershire Regiment; Private 6058 Arthur Brownlow (38) 1st Leicesters was KIA 21/6/1915 and Private 10588 Ambrose Brownlow (25) 6th Leicesters was KIA 17/7/1916
