George Gibson and Dinah Broom, both of Worksop, married in 1890 living at 52 Marecroft Worksop. Over the next few years they had three children, all boys, Richard 1891, Alfred William 1896 and Ernest born 1901, all in Worksop. George Gibson earned his living as a labourer in a timber yard. In 1911, the family were resident in St Cuthbert Street and then moved to Maltby. It was from here that the middle child, Alfred William, in 1916, went to Rotherham and en-listed in the Yorks and Lancs regiment.
Lce-Coprpl A W Gibson Worksop Guardian 18 January 1918 We regret to announce the death in action of Lce-Coprpl A W Gibson, Y and L., Machine Gun Section, son of Mr and Mrs Gibson, Dukes Avenue, Maltby, late of Worksop. The young soldier was killed whilst bravely doing his duty in France on November 27th last, the official intimation having just been received. Lce-Coprpl Gibson was born in Worksop and attended the Abbey Boy’s School. He was afterwards employed as a pony driver at Creswell and subsequently at Steetley, afterwards removing to Maltby where he worked as a haulage hand. He joined up about eighteen months ago and had the makings of a good soldier. This is not surprising, as his father was a soldier in his younger days, and went through several engagements, whilst his grandfather is an army pensioner. His brother and several other relatives are also serving with the Colours. Lce-Coprpl Gibson was well liked by all who knew him and his death is a severe blow to his parents and other members of the family, who have the sympathy of their many friends in their sorrow. Sympathy will also be expressed with Miss E A Cassidy, of Kilkeel, Ireland, to whom he was engaged, and who was a sister of his great chum.
