Stephen Pells was born into a large family in Worksop to William and Mary Jane Pells. The couple already had 5 children living at 132 Kilton Road, Worksop when Stephen was born in 1890. A further 4 were born after Stephen making 10 in all. Shortly after the birth of her last child, Alfred, Mary Jane died, age 39. Father, William, carried on and 2 years later was looking after 9 of his children and the household had also increased, being further occupied with William’s sister in law and 4 of her children, making a total of 15 inhabitants. In 1903, William married Emma Marklew, and moved into 186 Gateford Road. By now, all the children has left home with the exception of One. In 1911 Stephen and his brother, Fred were residing at 183 Kilton Road, the Watkinson household where both were working as miners
Stephen Pells enlisted at Worksop on the 5th Sept 1914.He embarked Davenport 4th June 1916 and disembarked at Basra 6th July 1916. Went into action 9th August 1916. He was killed in action and commemorated on the Basra Memorial
His younger brother, Fred Pells was killed in France on the 26th June 1916. Research by Colin Dannatt
