Family History

James Wing was born in 1895 at Newthorpe, he was the eldest son of George Barnes a miner onsetter and his mother Mary Wing née Exton of 249 Nottingham Road Hill Top Nottinghamshire. His father George Barnes was born in 1868 at Allington, Lincolnshire, his mother was born in 1869 at Grantham, they were married in 1891 their marriage was recorded in the Bingham registration district, his mother Mary Ann brought a child to the marriage a daughter Emma Exton born 1883 at Cropwell Bishop, they went on to have the following children, James b1895, Selina b1895, Bernard b1902, Gladys b1902, Lilley b1906, Irene b1910 and Frank b1911 all were born in Newthorpe In the 1911 census the family are living at Nottingham Road, Hill Top, Eastwood and are shown as George Wing 43 yrs a miner onsetter, he is living with his wife Mary 42 yrs and their children, Emma 28 yrs a domestic servant , James 16 yrs a miner pony driver below ground, Bernard 9 yrs a scholar, Gladys 9 yrs a scholar, Lilly 5 yrs, Irene 1 year and Frank 3 months old.

Military History

Private James Wing Wing was an active member of the Eastwood Cadet Corps. He enlisted on 2nd April 1916 at Eastwood, he served with the 2/8th battalion Sherwood Foresters and served in Ireland after the Easter Rising. He went out to France as a stretcher bearer in February 1917 and later transferred to 1st battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment and was killed in action on 24th March 1918, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Pozieres Memorial.
