Albert George Astle

Albert George (Bert) was the son of Frederick George Astle and his second wife Elizabeth nee Hudson. Frederick (b. Sutton Bonington) was married first to Eliza Harrison (baptised 26 July 1857, Kegworth, Leicestershire), the daughter of Samuel and Sarah Harrison. They had two children both of whom were born in Kegworth: Edith b. 1878 (O/N/D Shardlow Derbyshire) and Frank birth registered 1881 (J/F/M Shardlow). In 1881 Frederick (23) a framework knitter, and Eliza (23) were living at Plumber Lane, High Street, Kegworth, with their two children, Edith (2) and Frank (2 months). Although a record of Eliza's death has not yet been traced, Frederick married Elizabeth Hudson (b. Kingston on Soar) in 1884 (J/A/S Shardlow). According to the information provide by Frederick on the 1911 Census, he and Elizabeth had been married for 26 years and had had four children: Hilda b. 1885 Kegworth (J/A/S Shardlow), Arthur Frederick b. 1887 Kegworth (J/A/S Shardlow), Harry b. 1993 Nottingham (A/M/J Nottingham) and Albert George b. 1895 Nottingham (A/M/J Nottingham). In 1891 George Frederick (33), now a confectioner, was living at 109 Mansfield Road, Nottinghan, with his wife Elizabeth (36), his two children by his first wife, Edith (12) and Frank (10) and Hilda (5) and Arthur (3). The family had moved to 171 Mansfield Road, Nottingham, in the parish of Holy Trinity, by 1901. Frederick (43) was a confectioner on his own account. In the home on the night of the census were his wife Elizabeth (46) and five of his six children: Edith (22) and Hilda (15) who were both probably assisting in their father's business, Arthur (13), Harry (9) and Albert (6). Frank has not yet been traced on either the 1901 or 1911 Census, but it is probable that he survived as he is referred to in the notice of his father's death in 1936. The family was still at 171 Mansfield Road in 1911. Again, only five of Frederick's children were at home on the night of the census: Edith (32) and Hilda (25) who were both working as confectioner's assistants, Arthur (21) an antique dealer, Harry (19) a chemist's apprentice and Albert (16) an apprentice in fine arts dealer. Albert's mother, Elizabeth, died in 1936 (June Nottingham) aged 81 and his father, Frederick George, died the same year on 26 November 1936. His half-sister Edith died unmarried on 3 April 1966. She was still living at the old family home at 171 Mansfield Road, Nottingham. Arthur Frederick married Dora P Simkins in 1916 (O/M/D Nottingham). Dora was also to lose a brother in the war, Colour Sergeant Major Daniel Simkins 2/7th Bn Sherwood Foresters, killed in action 1 May 1917 (Templeux-le-Guerdard British Cemetery), two days before Albert's death. Arthur died on 18 February 1957, his wife survived him. They were then living at 26 Thorougood Road, Clacton on Sea, Essex. They had at least one child, Irma Betty b. 4 November 1922 (1922 O/N/D Nottingham), who died unmarried on 9 January 1987; she was still living at 26 Thoroughgood Road, Clacton on Sea. Irma had been an executor of both her father's and aunt Edith's wills.
