Family History

Arthur Edwards was born in 1888 he was the son of John, a brewer's labourer, and Mary Jane Edwards née Hinchcliffe of 27 Victoria Street Kimberley Nottingham and the brother of Albert, Edith and James Edwards (1901 Census). John was born in 1861 at Kimberley Mary Jane Hinchcliffe was born in 1863 at Manchester, they were married on 22nd September 1885 at Holy Trinity Church, Kimberley they had 6 children, sadly 3 died in infancy or early childhood. He was the husband of Frances Crump of 69 Bentley Road Doncaster (Medal Roll). The couple married J/F/M 1917 a few months before his death.

Military History

Arthur Edwards served as a sergeant in the York and Lancaster Regiment, deploying to France 27th August 1915, he was commissioned on 26th June 1917 (Medal Roll). He was killed in action on 17th September 1917 having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial panel 125-128.

Extra Information

CWGC lists his battalion as 3rd York and Lancaster whereas the headstones cites 8th. CWGC has 17/9/1917 as date of death (corroborated by the Medal Roll) and the headstone 18/9/1917.
