Thomas was the son of William and Emma Whittaker (née Parkin) and born in Newington, Nottinghamshire, in the civil parish of Misson and close to Bawtry. His father Thomas was born in Austerfield, Yorkshire, in about 1860 and his mother Emma was born in Bawtry, Nottinghamshire, in about 1859. They were married in 1881 (reg. Doncaster) and had ten children of whom seven survived infancy or childhood: Thomas William b. Newington birth registered 1882 (J/F/M); Willie b. Newington 1883; Mary b. Newington; Joseph Walter b. Torworth, Notts; Ernest Walker b. Bawtry; Violet b. Bawtry and Emily b. Bawtry. Two of the three children who died young were probably: Jessie b. 1887 d. 1890 (J/F/M East Retford) and Charles b. 1889 (J/A/S East Retford) d. 1889 (J/A/S). Shortly after their marriage in 1881 William and Emma were living in Misson, Nottinghamshire, but by 1891 were living on North Road, Torworth, with their four children Thomas (9), Willie (7), Mary (6) and Joseph (7m.). William was working as a bricklayer's labourer. By 1901 they had moved to Bawtry; only five of the seven children were in the home on the night of the census: Thomas, Joseph, Ernest (7), Violet (4) and Emily (1). William, a labourer at a sand pit, and Emma were living on Church Street, Bawtry, by 1911. In the home were five of their children: Willie a farm labourer/rabbit catcher, Joseph a coal merchant's labourer, Ernest a farm labourer, and Violet and Emily who were still at school. Thomas had married Sarah Ann Hindley in 1906 (reg. East Retford). His wife was born in Sutton, Nottinghamshire, and was the daughter of Thomas and Mary Hindley. They had three children, Thomas, George and Mavis Mary. In 1911 Thomas, a labourer, and Sarah lived on Station Road, Bawtry, with their sons Thomas (3) and George (1). Their daughter was born a year later. Also in the household was a lodger, William Griffen, a labourer. Sarah probably remarried after Thomas's death as there is a record of the marriage of a Sarah Ann Whittaker to John T Pagdin in 1924 (O/N/D Doncaster).
He enlisted at Doncaster on 12th November 1915. Thomas William was killed on 24 August 1917 during a strong German counter attack. He had acted as a servant to Lieutenant Stowe who was killed at the same time. (CWGC - no trace Lieut. Stowe) Thomas William has no known grave and is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium (Panel 108 to 111). He qualified for the British War Medal and Victory Medal.
Thomas William's brother-in-law, William Hindley, served in the 10th Bn Sherwood Foresters (28641 Private) and was reported missing, later confirmed killed in action, on 31 October 1916. See record on this Roll of Honour. The Captain of his [Thomas William's] company writing to the deceased's widow said: 'I have known your husband ever since he joined the battalion in May 1916 and I realise what a splendid, true British soldier I have lost.'
