Charles was born in 1877 at Bawtry he was the son of Charles Massey of Austerfield and was a gamekeeper for Mr F Parker Rhodes of Finningley Park,Austerfield. In the 1911 census he and the family are living at Partridge Hill,Bawtry he is shown as being 34 years of age and states he was born at Haworth and his occupation is that of a gamekeeper. he has been married to his wife Ann 33 yrs born Belton,Lincolnshire for 8 years and has two surviving children Hannan Mary born 1903 at Belton and Sarah Elizabeth born 1904 at Belton at the time of his death he left a widow and 3 children so must have had a further child after 1911. His wife Ann and the children were living at 23, Gladstone Rd., Hexthorpe, Doncaster following his death.
He enlisted at Doncaster and served with the Army Service Corps with the service number RX/4/262006 before transferring to the 1st battalion Wiltshire Regiment. he died of wounds on 3rd November 1918 at the 38th casualty clearing station in France. A letter from the clearing station states he was wounded with others by the same shell and suffered severe chest wounds, he was operated on and rallied a little, however his wounds became infected and died of septic poisoning
He is buried at Awoingt British Cemetery near Cambrai, France. Research by Colin Dannatt
