Arthur Bambridge

He attested 1/91914 at Nottingham and was posted to 11th Reserve Cavalry. 1/61915 he was transferred to 3rd Bn Dorset Regiment before being posted to the 5th battalion on 29/08/1915. On that day he sailed with his battalion to Gallipoli. On 09/10/1915 he was appointed lance corporal whilst in the Dardanelles, but on 17/12/1915 he was admitted to 33rd Field Ambulance with odema of the legs. He was sent to the 2nd Australian General Hospital on Mudros the same day. He was sent to the Base Depot on 24/12/1915 ready for service, but on 12/01/1916 he reverted to the rank of private at his own request. He finally rejoined his unit on 17/01/1916. Once the campaign finished the battalion moved to Egypt. It left Alexandria on 03/07/1916 and was transported to France. On September 26, 1916 the battalion took part in an attack on Mouquet Farm near Ovillers, part of the on-going Battle of the Somme. The troops advanced from support trenches at 12.35 p.m. and were immediately hit by a concentrated German artillery barrage, sustaining heavy casualties even before they reached the enemy lines. Over 423 men became casualties, including Pte. Bambridge who was killed in the day's fighting. His body was never recovered, but his name was commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial.
