George was born in 1897 the son of George William a Jacquard card cutter and Ada Emma L Kemp who lived at 7 Rutland Terrace Bunbury Street Meadows Nottingham. George and Ada had 7 children, Ada M (b 1891) , Lily (b 1892), William H (b 1894), George Thomas (b 1897), Arthur (b 1899), Herbert (b 1900), and James (b 1902). In 1901 the family lived at 7 Orchard Street Nottingham. In 1904 George's mother Ada Emma L died. By 1911 the family lived at 7 Rutland Terrace Bunbury Street Meadows.
23314 Private George Thomas Kemp enlisted in to the Sherwood Foresters (Notts and Derby Regiment) in August 1914 and was posted to 9th battalion. He served on Gallipoli and at some point was posted to the 10th battalion, before eventually the 1st battalion. On 28 August 1918, the 2nd Battle of Arras (Breaking of the Hindenburg Line) was raging. The enemy attacked the 1st battalion, getting into their trenches and hand to hand fighting was joined in the trenches. The 1st battalion fought the enemy off with heavy losses on both sides. During he afternoon the men threw over 3000 bombs, including upwards of 1000 German stick bombs. Twenty men were killed during the day including George Thomas Kemp. He had served for four years, on Gallipoli, in Egypt and France & Flanders.
