Harry Douglas Maltby was born on 4th November 1896 at Nottingham and was the son of Arthur Henry an auctioneers porter and Selina Maltby nee Simms of 28 Parliament Terrace, Nottingham. His father was born in 1871 at Nottingham and his mother Selina Simms was born in 1872 at Nottingham, they were married on 26th March 1892 at the Nottingham Register office and went on to have children, sadly one died in infancy or early childhood, their surviving children were, William b1892, Harry b1896, Leonard b1898, Frederick b1906 and Winnie born 1909, all were born in Nottingham. In the 1911 census the family are living at 28 Parliament Terrace, Nottingham and are shown as Arthur Henry 40 yrs an auctioneers porter, he is living with his wife Leah 39 yrs and their children, William 19 yrs a farm labourer, Harry 15 yrs a lace pressor, Leonard 13 yrs a scholar, Frederick 5 yrs and Winnie 2yrs. Harry married Alice Baker 9born 4th November 1896) in 1915 at Nottingham, they a child prior to wedlock Lois born 30th April 1915, they lived at 43 Chelsea Street, New Basford, Nottingham. Following his death his widow was granted a pension of 18shillings and 9 pence to commence on 22nd October 1917.
Private Harry Maltby, enlisted at Nottingham and served with the 12th Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers. He landed in France on 7th October 1915 and was killed in action on 2nd April 1917. He is commemorated on the Arras Memorial.
His father Arthur Henry enlisted on 2nd August 1918 at Nottingham, he gave his age as 45 yrs and 7 months, his address as 1 High Cross Street, Nottingham, his occupation was that of a general dealer. He was posted to the Army Service Corps and embarked from Southampton on 5th November 1918ldisembarking the following day at Le Harve. He was returned to England on 13th July 1919 and demobilised on 15th July 1919
