Sam was born in 1890 at Edwinstowe , the son of Mrs Harriett Harrison of 1 Woodwards Yard, Arnold, Nottinghamshire. It would appear that his mother had re-married by the time the information of the next of kin was provided to the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. He worked at Crown Colliery ,Forest Town, Nottinghamshire. Sam married Alice Eliza Bosworth (born 1892 Redhill) in 1910 their marriage was recorded in the Mansfield registration district. In the 1911 census , Sam was living with his new wife at 111 Stanton Hill, Mansfield, he is boarding with John Haycox 24 yrs a coal miner hewer and his family, he is shown as Samuel Lucas 20 yrs a colliery stoker and is boarding with his wife Alice Eliza Lucas 19 yrs. Sam and Alice had a son George who was born in 1911 at Mansfield His widow later lived at 121 Brookvale Road, Witton, Birmingham.
Private Sam Lucas enlisted in December 1914 at Mansfield and lived in Ashfield (Sutton in Ashfield) It also shows that he previously served with The Sherwood Foresters with regimental number 20669 and while in France was wounded and returned home. He was kept on home service duty it being common practice at the time to send medically down-graded men to the Royal Defence Corps in which capacity they became the equivalent of and supported the Home Guard. He contracted influenza and died in Grantham military hospital on 9th November 1918 he is buried at Arnold Redhill Cemetery. and leaves a widow and one child.
