Frank Thompson was born in 1897 and baptised on 12th July 1897 at Tibshelf, he was the son of Harry Thomas a colliery blacksmith and Martha Thompson née Goldingay of Mansfield Road, Tibshelf. Harry Thomas was born in 1865 at Hinkley, Warwickshire Martha Goldingay was born in 1862 at Castle Bromwich, they were married in 1883 their marriage was recorded in the Aston, Warwickshire registration district, they went on to have 6 children, 1 sadly died in infancy or early childhood. In 1911 the family are living at 14 Victoria Street, Tibshelf, Harry Thomas is 56 yrs and a colliery blacksmith, living with his wife Martha 49 yrs and 4 of their children, including Frank 13 yrs a grocers errand boy
Private Frank Thompson attested on 17th January 1916 at Mansfield, giving his age as 18 yrs and 236 days he was a butcher, posted to the reserves he was mobilised for war on 20th May 1916, posted to the 2nd battalion Leicestershire Regiment. He embarked from Devonport on 11th October 1916 en route to Mesopotamia he disembarked at Basra on 7th December 1916. He was admitted to hospital at Baghdad on 18th April 1917 dangerously ill with dysentery and died at 03.30 on 22nd April 1917. He is buried at Baghdad (Northgate) War Cemetery, Iraq.
