George Kerton was born in 1880 at Barrow in Furness and was the son of the late Walter and Grace Kerton néé Gibson of 84 Norland Street, Nottingham. His father Walter was born in 1836 at Lambeth, his mother Grace Gibson was born in 1848 at Madras, India, they were married on 11th February 1863 in Madras and went on to have the following children Edmund Walter b1864, Emily Grace b1868, Katherine b1872, all were born in Madras they had two further children, Frank Brougham b1875 and George b1880 both born in Barrow in Furness. George married his wife Anastasia Kensington Critchley (born 11th March 1883 ) in 1908 at Nottingham, they had a daughter, Edna Catherine born 19th August 1910 and a son George Daniel born 9th July 1913, they lived at 43 Lotus Street, Nottingham. In the 1911 census they lived at 43 Lotus Street, Nottingham, and Anastasia later moved to 52 Vicarage Street, Huntingdon Street, Nottingham. In the same 1911 census his widowed mother is living at 84 Norland Road, Nottingham, she is shown as Grace Kerton 63 yrs a widow she is living with her children, Elizabeth Gertrude 28 yrs an over looker in swiss lace trade and Edith 25 yrs an examiner in the swiss lace trade. Following his death his widow Anastasia was awarded a pension of 22 shillings and 11 pence a wekk which commenced on 22nd April 1918.
As a reservist Kerton was mobilized on the outbreak of war and arrived in France on 11/12/1914. The battalion was involved in the Third Battle of Ypres in October 1917. It was exceptionally cold and wet, but the battalion moved forward, taking Angle Point and Aden House, exceptionally strong black houses, before they were relieved. Kerton was killed in the fighting and was buried at Dozinghem Military Cemetery.
Nottingham Evening Post notice (abridged), 20 October 1917: 'Kerton. On October 12th from wounds received the previous day, George Kerton, Grenadier Guards, husband of Annie (?) Kerton of 43 Lotus Street, age 37.' Nottingham St Mary parish register, p473 (1917): '43 Lotus Street. KIRTON [Kerton] George, 2 small children, husband a policeman, now a soldier.'
