John William Cooper was born in 1880 at Colsterworth and was the son of Jerry a farm labourer and Frances Cooper née Thorpe of Flawford, Plumtree His father Jerry was born in 1852 at Colsterworth, his mother Frances Thorpe was born in 1854 at Wilsford, Lincolnshire, they were married on 13th August 1876 at Colsterworth, they went on to have 10 children, sadly 4 were to die in infancy or early childhood, their surviving children all born in Colsterworth were George b1878, Joseph b1879, John William b1880, Alice b1882, Lucy b1889, and William Cooper b1891 In the 1911 census the family were living at Flawford Plumtree Nottinghamshire and were shown as Jerry 56 yrs a farm labourer, he is living with his wife Frances 57 yrs and their children, John William 30 yrs a brickyard carter and William 20 yrs a farm labourer.
Private John William Cooper enlisted at West Bridgford whilst residing at Plumtree, he initially served with the service number 40456 in the South Staffordshire Regiment, he later transferred to the King's Own Scottish Borderers. He was killed in action on 8th November 1917 and is buried at Bedford House Cemetery Enclosure 4 4 E 10
His brother Gunner Joseph Cooper attested on 1st December 1915 under Lord Derby's Scheme he gave his age as 36 yrs and 11 months his address as 38 Greyfriar Gate, Nottingham and was working for the sanitary department, his next of kin was his wife Edith of the same address. He was posted to the reserves and mobilised for war on 30th May 1916 and was posted to the Royal Garrison Artillery. He was posted to the 265th Seige battery on 7th October 1916 and landed in France on 1st March 1917. He died from a gunshot wound to the thigh on 3rd October 1917 at the 8th casualty clearing station in France and
