Family History

William Hardy Palmer was born in Sheffield in 1897. His parents, John William Hardy Palmer and Eliza Gillott had married in Sheffield in 1890. Although the family name is Palmer, in the 1901 census the name Hardy is used. William also had a younger sister named Clara who was born in Sheffield in 1900 at 264 Cricket Inn Road. John William Hardy Palmer died in 1902 age 37. In 1911, William and sister Clara were still living at 264 Cricket Inn Road, but the family head was their aunt Emily Hartley with an absence of their mother, whilst William was working as a brewer’s clerk. Their mother, at some stage re-married and became Mrs Eliza Wright.

William joined the Royal Field Artillery 16 Div Ammunition Col. and was killed in action and buried at Le Cateau Military Cemetery,
