William King and Florence Eliza Sarnders married in Worksop in 1898. William was in the house building trade and in 1901 was working as a bricklayers labourer, residing at 24 Low Town Street, Worksop. Their first child named William Arthur was born in 1899 in Worksop. Their next child, born 1901, John Frederick, sadly died before reaching his first birthday. There followed four more siblings to William Arthur, Janet Mary in 1903, Ernest in 1906, John in 1912 and Evelyn in 1915. By 1911 the family were living at 53 Marecroft.
Pte Arthur King Worksop Guardian 17 April 1919 The sympathy of our readers will be extended to Mr and Mrs W King of 59 Marecroft, Worksop, on the loss of their son, Pte Arthur King, Royal Scottish, who is reported killed in action. Before the war he was a pony driver at Manton Colliery and enlisted in 1915, when he was 16 years and five months old in the Notts and Derbys. He was sent to France but his mother obtained his release from the Army on account of his age. He went to work back at the pit, but when he attained his 18th birthday he was called to the colours. He needed no pressing and was eventually transferred to the Royal Scottish. He had been missing since March 24th 1918. The Red Cross Society were communicated with but no news could be ascertained concerning him. He is now reported killed or died of wounds. Pte King was a smart, well conducted lad, and a credit to his parents. He had laid down his life in a noble cause like so many others have done, and his bereaved parents will have the sympathy of all in their trouble.
