William Perkins was the youngest child of Herbert and Jane Perkins. He was born in 1896 in Worksop as was his former 2 siblings. The family were bought up living in Marecroft, Worksop. When William was 20 years old, he married Annie Dalby in 1913 at Worksop where they had 2 daughters, but unfortunately, one died in infancy.
Private William Perkins Worksop Guardian 22 November 1918 Another Worksop soldier to fall on the eve of the suspension of hostilities was Private William Perkins, Leicesters, son of Mr and Mrs Herbert Perkins, 20 Marecroft, where his wife, Mrs Annie Perkins also resides. The deceased lad died of wounds on Nov !5th, the day before his 23rd birthday. News that he had been killed by shrapnel, was conveyed in a letter written by a chum, Pte Watson, 36 John Street, to his mother and received last week, in which he asked the latter to convey the intelligence to Pte Perkins’ family. The official information from the War Office simply states that he died of wounds on Nov 15th. Pte Perkins was a smart and steady lad. He worked at Manton pit and was in the comb out took effect in May of this year. He was drafted to France on Sept 4th so that he had been at the Western Front, seventeen weeks when the end came. Much sympathy is expressed with his parents, young widow and other relatives. His brother, Pte Hbt. Perkins, is an ex-Territorial, and also served close upon two years when the latter were mobilised, and was then discharged on medical grounds. A brother-in-law, Pte A Sheperdson, Sherwood Foresters, enlisted when the war broke out. He saw service in the Dardanelles and was wounded. He also got his discharge.
