Harry Green was born on 4th September 1893 at Alfreton, he was baptised on 11th October 1893 at Alfreton and was the son of John Robert a veterinary surgeon and Harriett Green née Radford of High Street, Alfreton and later 132 Mansfield Road, Nottingham. His father John Robert was born in 1867 at Calverton, his mother Harriett Radford was born in 1869 at Alfreton, they were married on 24th April 1888 at Alfreton, they went on to have the following children, John Robert b1889 at Alfreton, Alfred b1891 Alfreton, Harry b1894 Alfreton, Eleanor Winifred b1896 Alfreton, Lawrence b 1898 Nottingham, Madeline Norah b1902 Nottingham and Muriel Isobel b1906 Nottingham. In the 1911 census the family are living at 132 Mansfield Road, Nottingham and are shown as John Robert 44 yrs a veterinary surgeon, he is living with his wife Harriett 42 yrs and their children, John Robert 22 yrs a chemist assistant, Alfred 20 yrs a lace warehouseman, Harry 17 yrs a drapers assistant, Eleanor 15 yrs an assistant lace worker, Lawrence 13 yrs school, Madeline Norah 9 yrs a scholar and Muriel Isobel 6 yrs of age.
Sergeant Harry Green, served with the 1/4th Battalion Leicestershire Regiment, he died of wounds on 15th October 1915 and is buried in Fouquieres Churchyard Extension. Almost certainly killed in the Battle for the Hohenzollern Redoubt, part of the action at Loos, which was the bloodiest engagement for 46th North Midland Division throughout the war.
Article published 20th October 1914 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “NOTTINGHAM OFFICER'S LOSS. “Sergeant Harry Green, aged 22, of the 4th Battalion Leicestershire Regiment, has been killed in action. He was the son of Lieut. J. R. Green, F.R.C.V.S., A.V.C., 2/1st South Notts. Hussars; [1] and Mrs. Green, of 5, Elm-avenue, Nottingham, and joined the army in September, 1914, being promoted to the rank of sergeant in the trenches. He had recently been recommended for a commission, and his papers had been sent in. “Lieut. Green's eldest son [2] served in Togoland with the West African Regiment, and his youngest son is Private Laurance Green, [3] 1/3rd Sherwood Foresters, Belton Park, Grantham.” [1] John Robert Green, veterinary surgeon, living at 132 Mansfield Road, Nottingham, at the time of the 1911 Census with his wife Harriette and family.
