Samuel was born in 1885 the son of William a farm labourer and Eunice Goddard née Henson of Wilford Road Ruddington. Samuel was born in 1856 at Stanton on the Wolds, Eunice Henson in 1857 at Ruddington. Married in 1875, they had twelve children, seven surviving infancy - Herbert b1876, Mary Annie b1881, Samuel b1885, Edith b1889, Isham b1891, Mary Foster b1896,and Lillian b1898. In 1911 they lived on Wilford Lane, Ruddington. Amy was an overlock stitcher, Isham a baker, Mary a framework knitter and Lilian a button trimmer.
Samuel Goddard enlisted in Nottingham. He was killed on 24 November 1915 whilst with a working party in the front line. At 5 p.m. 200 men moved out, made up of 100 men from 'A' and 'B' companies, to dig a new trench forward of the British front line near Beaumont Hamel. The enemy sent over a heavy artillery barrage which resulted in shells landing amongst the 200 men. Twelve men died immediately and fourteen others subsequently died of wounds.
