William Dunn was born in 1889 at Brinsley and was the son of William Thomas Dunn a colliery deputy manager and Fanny Dunn née Swain of Brinsley Nottinghamshire.His father William Thomas was born in 1864 at Brinsley, his mother Fanny Swain was born in 1865 also at Brinsley, they were married in 11th September 1888 at St James Church, Brinsley, they went on to have 6 children, sadly one died in infancy or early childhood, their surviving children all born at Brinsley were, William b1889, Harry b1892 , Ellen b1895, Dorothy b1898 and John b1903. In the 1911 census the family are living at Brinsley and are shown as William Thomas Dunn 47 yrs a colliery deputy manager, he is living with his wife Fanny 46 yrs and their children, William 22 yrs an assistant teacher, Harry 19 yrs an apprentice joiner, Ellen 16 yrs no occupation listed, Dorothy 13 yrs a scholar and John 8 yrs of age William married Olive Smalley in 1918 their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district, they lived at 'Croft House' Brinsley Nottinghamshire.

Military History

Second Lieutenant William Dunn was commission into the Lincolnshire Regiment. He was killed in action on 24th March 1918 and is buried at Sailly- Saillisel British Cemetery , France.
