He was the son of Henry and Mary Holland of 8 Locomotive Terrace, (off Victoria Road) Netherfield Nottinghamshire. Born 1894 at Netherfield, his father was a railway engine driver. In 1901 Ernest and his parents were living in Netherfield, along with his older siblings William, James, Henry and Ruth. Sadly Henry, the father, had died by 1911. Mary was still living at No 8 with her sons Ernest and Henry. Ernest was now a shorthand typist with a Builders Merchant
Ernest arrived in France on 16 September 1916. He was killed in action when his camp was shelled during the night of 19th July 1917. He was buried at the Dickebusch New Military Cemetery Extension, Belgium. His Mother requested the words "Peace Perfect Peace" be added to his headstone. He was eligible for the British and Victory medals
In memoriam published 18th July 1919 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “HOLLAND. – In affectionate remembrance of my dear son, Ernest, of 8 Locomotive-terrace, Netherfield, late 2nd Lieut. 10th South Staffs., killed in action 19th July, 1917.
