Oswald Cornek Gillott was born on 22nd July 1890 at Ripley and was the son of Thomas Gillott, M.I.C.E.,and Clare Isobel Gillott née Cronek of Upland House Eastwood, Nottinghamshire.His father Thomas was born in Stanton by Dale Derbyshire in 1846 and his mother Clare Isabel Cronek was born in 1845 in Rome they were married in 1875 their marriage was recorded in the Wakefield Registration District, they went on to have the following children, Mary Aloysia b1879 Leeds, Bernard Cuthbert b1884 Leeds, Thomas Ignatious Joseph b1886 Ripley, and Oswald Cronek b1891 RipleyIn the 1911 census his family are living at 45 Nottingham Road, Eastwood and are shown as Thomas 65 yrs a civil engineer, he is living with his wife Clare Isabel 66 yrs and their children, Mary Aloysia 32 yrs no occupation listed, Bernard Cutherbert 27 yrs a bank clerk and Thomas Ignatious Joseph 25 yrs an art student. Also living at the address and 2 female servants . In the 1911 Census Oswald Gillott was a 20 year old apprentice mechanical engineer, residing at 2 Woodland Terrace, Borough Road Middlesbrough Yorkshire. His probate was proven on 21st September 1917 at Nottingham and shows him as Oswald Cromek Gillott of 45 Nottingham Road, Eastwood, Second Lieutenant in H.M.Army died on 7th June 1917 in France , his effects of 32967, 15 shillings and 10 pence were left to Francis Gillott engineer.
Lieutenant Oswald Gornek Gillott originally attested at Middlesborough on 24th August 1914, living at Caulderbeck House in Middlesborough he was 24 yrs of age, his next of kin were his parents Thomas and Clare Gillott of Uplands, Eastwood,Nottingham. He was posted as a sapper in the Royal Engineers and promoted to Lance Corporal on 7th September 1914 and to Corporal on 5th December 1914. He was promoted to Sergeant on 1st July 1915 and embarked for the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force on 2nd July 1915. He was wounded on 9th October 1915 at Galipoli and returned to England on 31st October 1915. He was discharged to commission n 15th October 1916 and became a Lieutenant with 68th Field Company, Royal Engineers. He was killed in action close to Ypres on the first day of the Battle of the Messines Ridge, 7th June 1917. Possibly engaged in mining work. He is buried at Messines Ridge British Cemetery , Belgium.
His brother Bernard Cuthbert Gillott served during the war as a Captain in 6th Northamptonshire Regiment, winning the Military Cross and Croix d Guerre, eventually being invalided home.
