Horace Bellamy was born in 1896 in Worksop. His father and mother, was Thomas and Mary Jane, nee Fenton, who had a family of 5. When they first arrived in Worksop, they resided in 12 Crown Street and later at 61 Lincoln Street. After Horace's death the parents were living at 14, Featherstone Avenue, Worksop, Notts
After his early enlistment from Worksop he was enlisted in the Leicestershire Regiment, number 12255 before joining the Sherwood Forester. Pte Horace Bellamy Worksop Guardian 1 December 1916 Pte Horace Bellamy, Sherwood Foresters, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Bellamy, 61, Lincoln Street, Worksop, has been killed in action, official news being received on Friday, stating that he fell on October 31st. Pte. Bellamy’s name is another one that is to be added to the long list of those who have left Manton Colliery for the Army and who have died on the field of Battle. He enlisted in September, 1914, and was subsequently sent out with the Dardanelles Expedition, surviving in which, he was later drafted to Egypt. After nine month’s he was again removed, this time to France, landing about the middle of July. He was a brave and a real British Soldier, as one of his comrades says in a letter to his parents:- “It is with feeling of the deepest sympathy,” he stated, “I write this note to you, It was a bad day for me when I heard the news of the loss of your dear son, Horace. Do not give way too much at this great loss, though it is one only a brave father and mother can stand without flinching. You should, I assure you, be proud of such a son as Horace. Duty was always his first thought and ever since he came to France he and I have been best of chums, and I have never known him flinch before death. I was not with him when he passed away but I know he faced the ordeal fearlessly. He has laid down his life for God’s good cause and has won what is promised to all who fight the good fight……… Yours Very sincerely, F.D. Oakes, Pte.” The deceased was one of three brothers’ and was 20 years of age. The sympathy of the Worksop people will be extended to the bereaved family in their great trouble. A special memorial service will be held on Sunday, on behalf of Pte Bellamy, who was, before enlistment, a member of the Salvation Army Sunday school. The band will play the Dead March from Victoria Square on Sunday evening, and at the meeting afterwards, special selected solo’s and music will be given by the Band and Songsters, and there will be a draped alter and special memento’s of the departed comrade.
