Harry Dixon was born in 1885 in Worksop the son of George and Lucy Dixon of Meadow View, Cheapside, Worksop. Harry was the youngest of four children. Shortly after the birth of Harry, she became a widow and worked as a charwoman to support her children. In 1895 she married George Anderson at Worksop, a man 25 years her senior and he passed away in 1908 aged 84. In 1911 Harry was the only one left at home, still living at Meadow View, Cheapside and working as an colliery labourer underground. In 1913 Harry married in Worksop to Mary E Bailey followed by 2 children, Albert in 1914 and Violet in 1916.
Pte. H. Dixon Worksop Guardian 10 August 1917 Another Worksop man to lay down his life in the great struggle is Pte. H. Dixon, Nott’s and Derby’s, whose widow and two infant children live at 26, Cuthbert Street. Dixon, who before the war worked at Manton Colliery, enlisted in June, 1915, and after six months training was drafted out to France. He took part in the fighting at Lens, and subsequent engagements. He was wounded in May last year, and was also buried under debris thrown up by the shell. Last November he had the pleasure of seeing his home again, and ever since he has taken part in fighting that has fallen to the lot of the gallant Sherwood’s. He was reported missing on July 1st, and his widow has now received news of his death. He was well liked by all who knew him, and much sympathy is expressed with his widow and little children
