Albert Yates was born at Arnold in 1885, he was the son of Jonathan a boot repairer and his second wife Maria Yates née Thornhill of 81 St Albans Road, Arnold, Nottingham. His father Jonathan was born in 1832 at Arnold, he died in 1918 aged 86 yrs, he had been married in 1863 to Maria Pooley ( 1836-1872,) at St Mary's Church, Nottingham and had the following children, William b1858, Ann b1862, Elizabeth b1865, Harry b1866 and Emma b1869. Following the death of his first wife he went on to marry Albert's mother Maria Thornhill who was born in 1853 at Arnold, they were married in 1882 at Nottingham and had the following children, Arthur b1883, Albert b1885, Ada b1887,Ethell b1889 Fred b1891 and Hedly b1893. In the 1911 census the family are living at Wesley Mount, St Albans Road ,Arnold and are shown as Jonathan 79 yrs a boot repairer, he is living with his wife Maria 58 yrs and their children, Albert 26 yrs a drapers shop assistant, Ethel 22 yrs a machine turner and Hedly 18 yrs a scholar.
Lance Corporal Albert Yates enlisted in September 1914 into the Army at Nottingham and joined the Kings Royal Rifle Corps when after the completion of his basic training he was posted to their 13th battalion. He reached France on 30th July 1915. During fighting in the Menin Road area and during the attack on Broodseinde Ridge on the 4th October, the first day of the third battle of Ypres that Albert went missing and it was not until July 1918 that it was finally confirmed that Albert had been killed in action. He is buried in Tyne Cot Cemetery, Belgium
His brother Hedly Yates had enlisted on 1st September 1914 at Nottingham, giving his age as 21 yrs and 175 days , his occupation was that of a clerk, he was posted to the 4th battalion Sherwood Foresters with the service number 14119. He embarked from England on 30th May 1916 and landed in France. He was wounded on 12th October 1917, a gun shot wound to his right forearm and neck. He was treated and returned to England on 28th October 1917 and was in Hospital at Leicester. He was discharged from the Army on 22nd February 1919.
