Frederick was born in Retford in 1891 and was the son of Thomas a steam engine man and Charlotte Harrison, (nee Spyve ) of 12, Clinton Terrace, Retford. We first come across Frederick in the 1891 census , he is living with his parents at Poplar Street, Ordsall ,Retford he is 5 weeks old. By the 1911 census the family are living at 10 Whitehall Road, Retford , Thomas and Charlotte have had five children however only four survived to 1911 , the four children are still living with them they are , Lizzie ,Nellie Sydney and Frederick who is 20 years of age , single and working as a railway engine cleaner on the railway. He met and married Harriet Ann Bellamy and they had three children Ethel, John and Ronald and lived at of 4, Whitehall Rd., Retford.
Frederick enlisted in Retford in November 1914 with the Sherwood Rangers (Nottinghamshire Yeomanry ) with service number 2232. He was transferred to the 2/4th battalion Leciestershire Regiment. He was killed in action on 16th April 1918. His body was never recovered and identified and therefore his name is commemorated on the Ploegsteert memorial, Belgium.
Sergt Fred Harrison Retford Times 7th June 1918 As previously recorded, this brave soldier was killed by a shell on April 16th. His wife and three children live at 4 Whitehall Road, Retford. The deceased joined the Sherwood Rangers at Retford in November 1914. He trained with the regiment at Norfolk, Essex and in Kent. He was an instructor and held a first class certificate in musketry. Early this year, he with others was transferred to the Sherwood Foresters and upon arriving in France was transferred to the Leicesters. He was a son of Mr Thomas Harrison, Clinton Terrace, Retford, and after leaving the Council School was employed at the Beehive Works. He was a well known player of the Retford Football Club and was the holder of a medal won last year in connection with his Brigade. His widow is a daughter of Mr John Bellamy, West Markham.
